| Sony takes Z-Link to the Theatre |
On December 7th 2007 the world renowned Mariinsky theatre took delivery of a new HD OB van, a joint project combining the Russian based ISPA group and Sony UK. The majority of the work was carried out in the UK at Sony’s Basingstoke facility where project planning, body assembly and equipment installation was carried out.
The specification for the equipment included both optical fibre cable and Triaxial connection with Cove Broadcast’s Z-Link digital fibre camera back chosen for the interface.
The Hybrid HD Z-Links have the addition of RMB150 remote control allowing basic camera functions in addition to the camcorders VTR functions. The Tally light featured Z-links will be used to send pictures to remote sites more than as just a link for the camcorders.
Unprecedented in scope and technical solutions, this project has enabled the world renowned opera and ballet company to capture and broadcast performances with a 16-18 (22-26) camera OB studio as is tours the world

Z-LINK at Boris TV |
With existing and potential customers present, Boris TV’s OB trailer had several cameras on display including one connected via a Z-Link fibre optic link. This was demonstrated to show the difference that easy camera rigging and long distance operation can make. Using digital signals over fibre means that, no matter the length of the cable, the video, audio and all communications remained digitally perfect. Also the light compact cable drums make rigging easy work.

Christopher Smith, of Boris TV described what he saw Z-Link adding to his operations. “Our small-sized multi-camera unit is used for productions such as The Good Food Show, as well as for sporting events including equestrian events. Being able to place an iso camera far away from the others means we can shoot from all the required angles at once. So we get the wide-angle shots as well as the detailed close-ups all in one take. That’s so much better than having to do another matching run just to move a camera into the close-up position. The system will work up to 10 kilometres so it gives us tremendous scope to place cameras where we really want them, rather than how far the triax will stretch to.”

| COVE CONNECTS WITH EXPANDED BEAM AND SMPTE |
Cove Broadcast is showing the latest version of its Z-Link fibre optic camera link system for SD and HD. New features include the use of highly reliable and rugged fibre optic connectors that can terminate SMPTE 311M cable from any manufacturer. This adds to Z-Link’s features that this year has expanded with HD capability running alongside the existing SD-based connections, as well as more power configurations offering off-camera, as well as on-camera hybrid power solutions.
The Stratos International HX-1080 Expanded Beam (EB) connector used is designed for the harsh environments often encountered on OBs as well as in everyday studio operation. Unlike traditional butt-joint fibre technology, these can simply be wiped clean with a damp rag and continue to work efficiently over thousands of rigs and de-rigs. The HX-1080 matches the needs of Z-Link’s target environments including pressured TV operations. Besides offering exceptional reliability, they are hermaphroditic, removing all cable orientation and plug-and-socket concerns.

| Missing Link Found on Channel Islands |
Event locations are generally chosen for their size, position and fitness for purpose, and then any television coverage has to fit around whatever is supplied. So it was that the Third Annual Channel Islands ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ black-tie dinner and awards took place in the Grand Hall at The Hotel De France on Jersey. Channel Television provided live coverage so everyone else in the Islands could share the experience.......................................... READ FULL STORY HERE
